Under Eye Hollowing:

What is under eye hollowing?

Under eye hollowing, often referred to as tear troughs, is simply the loss of volume/fat underneath the eye socket that may cause someone to look really tired, older than they are, or even sickly.

What causes under eye hollowing?

There can be several factors the lead to or cause under eye hollowing, but some of the main causes include the following:

  • Genetics 
  • Natural aging process
  • Extreme weight loss
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of sleep/exhaustion 
  • Lack of proper nutrients

What treatments can I have done for under eye hollowing?

The best aesthetic treatment for under eye hollowing consists of dermal filler and cheek filler to give the under eye area support if there is a volume deficit. The type of dermal filler will be chosen by the provider/injector after a consultation and anatomy assessment, but some of the more popular filler products for this concern include: Belotero, Restylane, or  RHA.

This area is very tricky when it comes to injecting, and oftentimes the area is not treated properly, or is over-filled, leaving the under eyes looking puffy. Ensure you see a licensed, experienced injector before going through with this treatment if you are a good candidate.

How long does under eye filler last?

On average, under eye filler lasts about 12 months. This time frame can also be dependent on the type of filler used and the individual’s lifestyle, age, and severity of hollowing. We recommend talking with your provider to understand realistic expectations with your treatment.

What are under eye bags?

Under eye bags are usually associated with raised pockets underneath the eye area that are puffy and may be slightly swollen or tender to the touch.

What causes under eye bags?

The cause of under eye bags differ for each individual, but some common causes of under eye bags are listed below:

  • Natural aging process 
  • Weakening of muscle/tissue under the eye
  • Genetics
  • Fluid retention
  • Lifestyle and diet 

What are the best treatments for under eye bags?

The best aesthetic treatments for under eye bag concerns include: RF Microneedling, referral for Agnes RF, and surgical referral to a plastic surgeon. Can I permanently get rid of under eye bags?

The best way to permanently get rid of under eye bags is surgical referral to a plastic surgeon. In most cases, they will suggest removing the excess skin and fat pad via a procedure called a blepharoplasty. We recommend seeing a licensed, well experienced plastic surgeon for this concern if you are not a good candidate for minimally invasive aesthetic treatments.

What are dark under eye circles?

Dark under eye circles are usually associated with darkening color underneath the eye area that can look tan or gray-ish. Learn more about the causes of this below:

What causes dark under eye circles?

Dark circles usually appear from the following causes:

  • Genetics/a family history of dark under eye circles
  • Lifestyle- dehydration, lack of nutrients, allergies
  • Exhaustion or excessive stress

What are the best treatments for dark under eye circles?

The best aesthetic treatments for dark under eye circles include topical products like hyrdoquinone, laser treatments such as IPL or ResurFX, and sometimes a lightening chemical peel. 

  • Lightening topical products work well to even the skin tone and reduce the visibility of the darkness under the eyes, however this treatment can take time and consistency to see improvement.
  • Laser treatments like IPL and ResurFX work to lighten the area too, via light technology and resurfacing attributes. A series of laser treatments are usually needed to see improvement, but we recommend to consult with a provider to see which laser would be best for your concerns. 
  • Lastly, some chemical peels may be beneficial, as certain lightening acids can even out the skin tone (must proceed with caution around the eye area).

Blue Discoloration:

What is blue discoloration under the eyes?

Blue discoloration is a type of dark under eye circle that can be classified as “A blue or purple hue to the under eye skin”.

What causes blue discoloration under the eyes?

Having a blue discoloration under the eye are can be a result of the following causes:

  • Fair skin that shows the blood vessels underneath 
  • Thin skin tissue in the area 
  • Poorly placed filler
  • Genetics
  • Exhaustion

What are the best treatments for blue discoloration under the eyes?

The best aesthetic treatments for this under eye concern is to dissolve old dermal filler if it is present. Then try treatments that thicken the under eye skin such as: PRP/PRF injections, RF Microneedling and regular microneedling. Other than the above there is not a lot to be done about this since the blue color is coming from the (presumed healthy) blood vessels around the eyes.

Can under eye circles be removed naturally?

The short answer on whether dark circles can be removed naturally depends on the underlying cause. If they are from lack of sleep or poor nutrition then some improvement may be seen with better sleep and nutrition.

If there is genetic hyperpigmentation (darkening) then usually medical grade products and procedures are needed for lasting effects. However, a small modest change may be seen with at home topicals like retinoids and vitamin C and of course using a concealer. 

Remember that whatever you buy over the counter is usually 1/2 the strength and only 70% pure whereas medical grade can be prescription strength and must be 99% pure.

Summer Skin Guide

Introduction

There is no doubt that summer months are often busier and sunnier, but your skincare routine doesn’t need to drastically change. Often times the media scares people into never doing any skin treatments during the summer months, because you are exposed to the sun more. While you may be outdoors more often, do not let your skin care routine fall off path, or else all of your “hard work” may have to start at ground zero again, or close to it 😉.

This blog will cover the recommended treatments for summertime, from our licensed professionals, to maintain a youthful, healthy complexion.

Best sunscreen for summer

First things first, SPF!!! If there is one simple product that you could use every day, and age gracefully, is sunscreen. At Elite Medical & Aesthetics we emphasize and educate every patient about the importance of wearing mineral based sunscreen 30+ every sing day, and to reapply! We are not saying you cannot ever go out in the sun, just protect when you do!

Sunscreen protection is for everyone, wether you are receiving aesthetic treatments or not, because the UVA/UVB harmful rays can cause pre-mature aging and skin cancer. However, this is especially important if you are receiving any type of laser, chemical peel, or using clinical grade skincare products. 

Some helpful tips:

  1. Choose a sunscreen that you will actually wear every day. This may be different for everyone depending on their skin type, but there are many options.
  2. Reapplying can be a hassle, so finding a loose powder like, Matte Green Tea SPF Powder, makes this step easy and gives a sheer coverage.
  3. Pair your sunscreen with a cute hat when out in the sun for extended periods of time.

Summer spray tans

Opting for a quality spray tan over laying out in the sun and tanning is always the better option. It is understandable that feeling tan and getting color gives a boost of confidence, especially in the summer months. Luckily, there are many great options for spray tans that provide a natural glow, without the risks of UVA/UVB damage to the skin. Just remember, tan skin may look sexy when you are younger, but not so much as you age! Tan skin does not equal healthy skin, and once the sun damage has been done, it takes commitment, money, and time to reverse even a fraction of it.

Botox and filler in the summer

Continuing your provider’s recommended injectable routine is safe and just as effective in the summer. There are no contraindications, or risks, in the summer versus any other time of the year to get Botox, Xeomin, or any filler. If you wait to get your Tox or filler treatment too far after your last treatment, just because it is summer time, you may end up having to pay more money to get the results you want because the neurotoxin and filler substance is completely metabolized.

Summer laser hair removal

Microneedling and laser in the summer

Microneedling treatments such as, normal microneedling and RF microneedling can be done on any skin-type year round. Some lasers such as ResurFX can also be done year round. Since these specific treatments don’t target pigment you can even be tan (though we don’t recommend ever being tan unless it’s a spray 🙂 ). 

 

Each of these works to increase collagen, fade scarring, and reverse fine lines and wrinkles, year round. We still recommend being cautious in the sun after to maintain your results. Follow your provider’s after care instructions and continue your treatment plan as decided.

IPL in the summer

IPL, or intense pulsed light, should be done every 4 months to keep pigmentation and wrinkles at bay. In this study about the effectiveness of IPL/BBL treatments every 4 months for anti-aging, it is to be concluded that candidates looked 10 years younger than their actual age with no other treatments done.

IPL can be continued in the summer months for those who are diligent about not tanning and wearing SPF 30 or above with a wide brim hat. In most cases, people would rather be diligent with sun protection and staying out of the sun, rather than getting more sun damage and compromising the results from their treatment plans. 

***Note: Do not neglect your neck and chest! Bringing your skincare and SPF down to your chest is important! Also, ask your provider to add your neck and chest at your next treatment appointment. Just remember, your face is everything from the boobs, up 😉

In the summer, you may need facials more than any other time of the year, because of the extra sweat and oils we naturally accumulate from warmer temperatures. Facials like dermaplane, microdermabrasion, OxyGeneo, and enzyme signature facials are crucial in your skincare routines to properly exfoliate, hydrate, and keep your pores unclogged.

What is a good skincare routine for the summer?

Like all skincare routines, summer routines should be kept simple yet effective. Using a foaming/exfoliating cleanser in the summer months are beneficial since we tend to get more sweaty from the heat. Including a balancing toner can be helpful after cleansing, too. Incorporating a lighter moisturizer can be smart for the skin, as heavier creams can sometimes be too much. Ensuring you are continuing to use a clinical grade vitamin c serum in the morning and a retinol in the evening is best. There is no need to stop using “active ingredients” such as acids, retinols, or vitamin c’s in the summer if you are committed to using a quality mineral based SPF (which should be worn every day of the year). Again, reapply your SPF and wear a wide brim hat when out in the sun for extended periods of time.

When to Consider Botox vs Dermal Filler

It is not uncommon for people to get confused when they go in for an injectable appointment thinking they need Botox, when really they might need dermal filler, or vice versa. Sometimes misinformation can be given from social media, the internet, or even other injectors. 

This blog will help you understand the differences between what Botox is intended for, and what filler is intended for.

How does Botox work?

Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is a prescription medication used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Botox, or other brands of neurotoxin like Xeomin and Dysport, work to stop muscles from creating a repetitive movement that lead to unwanted lines and wrinkles. Botox injections are also preventative, to keep lines from worsening.

How does filler work?

Most dermal fillers are made of a gel-like substance called Hyaluronic Acid (HA) that are used to restore lost volume, fill lines and wrinkles, sculpt areas of the face, and plump. When filler is injected properly into the desired areas, it instantly plumps or fills the areas of volume depletion, giving you a refreshed, natural, and youthful appearance.

What areas can I get Botox injections?

The most common areas for Botox injections, or Botulinum ToxinA, are the glabella (11’s), forehead, and crows feet. There are several other areas that are considered “off label” that can be treated with neurotoxin, too, such as:

  • Bunny lines: lines on either side of the nose when you scrunch
  • DAO’s: depressor anguli oris muscle (around the mouth)
  • Platysmal bands: neck bands
  • Masseter muscle: jaw muscle  
  • Lip Flips

What areas can I get filler injections?

The most common areas for filler injections are probably the lips and the cheeks but other areas include:

  • Under eyes
  • Jawline
  • Temples
  • Chin
  • Nasolabrial folds
  • Marionette lines
Certain types, like Radiesse, can also be used to help create collagen in the face, neck and body. 

Remember, filler is considered much more dangerous than Botulinum Toxin injections because the gel like substance is more like an implant (usually lasting around a year) and can also occlude vessels. Some areas are higher risk than others and you want to go to an injector that knows the risks and how to treat them. 

Does Botox or filler help forehead lines & wrinkles?

Botox helps with forehead lines and wrinkles, and is our recommendation here over filler due to to less risk (see below). When you inject neurotoxin into the forehead muscles, it stops the repetitive muscle movement that causes lines and gives a refreshed appearance.

Can you inject filler in forehead lines?

We do not recommend injecting filler into deep forehead lines, because there is a risk for vascular occlusion (filler that gets into an artery) that can lead to blindness. 

Vascular occlusion can happen anytime filler is injected but in high risk areas such as the forehead, glabella, and nose blindness or even a stroke could occur. As far as we know there are no cases where the blindness was able to be reversed when it was caused by filler. 

Some clinicians will do these injections, and if you decide to have it done, make sure you ask about their experience doing it and what they would do in case of emergency. 

There are several other treatments that can help with forehead lines and wrinkles such as Botox, microneedling, laser treatments or a surgical referral. 

Does Botox or filler help with Glabella (11's) lines?

Botox is recommended for Glabella lines over filler. This is because  when you continually scowl or frown, the glabella muscles are activated to move, and over time those constant movements cause lines. Botulinum toxin injections, once injected into the muscle, stop the constant scowl or frowning and thus softens the lines and wrinkles.

Can you inject filler in the Glabella (11's) lines?

Technically, you can inject filler in the 11’s, but we do not recommend it. Like mentioned above, injecting filler in this area has a high risk for vision complications. Safety is a priority when it comes to injectables. If you have deep 11’s lines that are there at rest, and Botulinum Toxin injections have not worked for you, book a consult to see what else can be done.

Can I get Botox injections for my smile lines?

No, you should not get Botox injections in your smile lines because it could cause your face to look distorted or drop your top lip. 

Specifically in the nasolabrial fold area, there is a muscle called the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi (LLSAN) that is injected intentionally for people with a “gummy smile” to drop the top lip. If you don’t have a gummy smile, you don’t want to inject this area or it can lengthen your philtrum column (more below). 

Getting Botox injections in your smile lines can cause a ducky lip.

As above, if you inject Botox into the smile lines, it’s possible to cause the philtrum column (the distance between the bottom of nose and mouth) to lengthen. A longer philtrum column can create a ducky upper lip appearance with or without lip filler. 

Ensure you are going to an experiened licensed injector so these types of side effects/risks are avoided. However, Botox is not permanent, so side effects will wear off in 3-4 months.

Can I get filler injections for my smile lines?

Yes, filler injections are an appropriate treatment for smile lines. Smile lines can become static and more defined as we age, and people tend to dislike these lines. Filler is the best option because we want to fill the lines and wrinkles with volume to restore a natural look in the area.

Can I get Botox injections in my cheeks?

No, getting regular Botox injections in the cheek region can cause unwanted side effects. These side effects cause face distortion to your smile and talking movements. Sometimes microtox or “baby botox” can be used to smooth the skin but it can still cause unwanted side effects.

What is Baby Botox?

What happens if Botox is injected into cheeks?

If Botox was injected into the cheek muscles, there is a risk that your smile will look as if you had a stroke or Bell’s Palsy. This is because the muscles in the cheek connect to the corner of the mouth to lift it when you smile. If these muscles are disabled, you will not be able to lift the corner of your mouth.

Can I get filler injections in my cheeks?

Yes, it is very common to get filler injected into the cheek region. Filler can enhance the appearance of lost volume in the cheeks, contour the cheeks for definition, and add structure to the cheek for other areas of concern to be treated such as under eyes.

What does Botox treat that filler doesn't?

Botox treats the muscles that lead to wrinkles, where as filler treats deep lines/wrinkles that need to be filled to restore volume

How to prepare for a lip filler appointment

If you’re considering lip filler know that it is normal to be nervous, but we hope that after reading this article you’ll be more excited instead! Most commonly, people are concerned about pain from the needles, looking over-done or having “duck lips”, or  maybe not knowing what to expect at all.

Rest assured that these appointments are very thorough, and should be comfortable when you go to a licensed injector who follows all safety precautions.

Before actually getting the injections, it is recommended that you consult with your provider about what your desired results are. They will assess, and ensure that you are a good candidate and go over  realistic expectations of lip filler and known risks. What is a lip filler consultation like?

First, your injector will talk to you about what you’re looking to achieve, what brought you in, and what questions you may have to better understand your goal with lip filler. Then they will assess your specific anatomy, and talk to you about the realistic expectations that can be achieved on you. Once you and the injector have agreed upon the treatment plan, they will go over benefits of the treatment, risks, and potential side effects (informed consent). 

Informed consent is crucial, and mandatory, for all medical procedures. This is where the provider goes into depth about risks, potential side effects, and even alternatives to the treatment. The goal here is to give you all of the information so you can make an informed decision if the treatment is right for you. Some people aren’t even a candidate for lip filler so it’s good to talk first!

How do I prepare for lip filler?

Once all of your questions and concerns are answered, the injector will start the numbing process. This is to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during the treatment. There are two option with numbing specifically for lip filler. You and your injector should discuss which option would be best for you, but read below for a description of both.

2 Types of Numbing Options

1. Topical Numbing Agent 

This is a topical medication that is compounded to combine local anesthetics such as lidocaine and tetracaine. Once this is placed on the lips, it starts working by blocking nerve signals in the body to reduce discomfort from initial injections.

2. Dental Block

A dental block refers to injecting an anesthetic agent, such as lidocaine, (typically) into the infraorbital nerve and mental nerve through the mouth. This provides the client with complete numbness of the lips prior to injection. 

How long does it take to become numb for lip filler?

For topical numbing, it usually takes 5-30 minutes for the effects of the numbness to work (depending on the compound). The area continues to remain numb for 30 minutes to 1 hour after removal. Dental Blocks immediately start numbing the lips and the effects of this numbing process may remain for several hours hours post injections.

This works quickly, allows patient to move their lips easier during injections (for better assessment), and wears off quicker for patient to go about their day

Con's of topical numbing

Patient is not 100% numb, some formulations can cause blanching (whitening) of the lips making the assessment difficult for the provider

Con's of dental block

Initial dental injections go deep into gums and are painful. This can also make assessment difficult when moving mouth, because patient can be too numb. Numbness lasts for hours after treatment.

What is lip filler treatment set-up like?

While the desired numbing agent is working, the provider will start to set up for the treatment using industry standards. This includes washing hands, placing sterile drape onto tray, using gloves, properly preparing the filler products, and cleaning the injection site(s) on the client. This step is especially important because lip filler injections are a medical treatment that needs to be administered safely. Going to licensed providers that have a clean and sterile environment is crucial to lower any potential risk, and ultimately to keep you safe.

How long do lip filler injections take?

This is the quickest part of the appointment. The actual lip injections only take 10-15 minutes. You can expect that your injector ensures you are comfortable throughout the injecting process, giving you breaks where needed. From here they will start to inject the filler by building the lips to fit the patient’s specific features. Overall, the goal should be to harmonize the lips and create balance to the face by subtly enhancing the lips. You should not feel anxious or worried about getting “duck lips” from this filler procedure. With the right injector, you will gain a boost of confidence, instead.

Will I swell after lip injections?

Swelling and bruising is normal, and your injector should disclose this part of the treatment with you at the consultation and assessment step, that way you are aware and can plan for social down-time. For initial downtime, the first 24 hours is the worst, then swelling subsides day by day and can be covered by makeup.

It is also recommended to not plan this appointment on (or too close to) any important social gatherings, pictures, or work presentations. 

Generally we tell people not to “love them or hate them for 2-weeks” but give them 30 days to fully settle. Ultimately, the treatment should be done at least 4-6 weeks before any big event.

From these photos, you can see there is initial swelling right after the injections. Keep in mind, this is normal and to be expected. Do not be surprised either, if swelling gradually increases throughout the day into the night. 

What do providers put on lips after injections?

Once the provider is finished with injecting, they will finish the procedure with these steps:

1. Massaging the filler to ensure it is even and smooth

2. Applying post-injection cream to prevent biofilm

3. Apply medical grade anti-bacterial ointment on top to prevent infection

These 3 simple steps make a big difference in treatment outcomes! As mentioned earlier, it is crucial to get dermal filler from a licensed provider who is well-educated and takes all necessary precautions to keep you safe. 

 

What is lip injection aftercare like?

After the injections, your provider will recap what to expect following the appointment, and any precautions to take. This is to ensure you are confident in what to expect with the healing process after the appointment and avoid any risks. At Elite Medical & Aesthetics we often tell patients:

  • No tongues on their lips for 24 hours (theirs, their significant other, children or pets)
  • No touching for 24 hrs
  • No make-up on the injection area for 24 hours

You might be surprised by how many beautiful, and naturally  appearing brides, have had Botox, fillers, laser treatments, Kybella and more before the big day! That, on top of social media filters and edited photos, there can be a lot of pressure to look a certain way before your event

When it comes to aesthetics, most brides have a lot of questions regarding skincare, injectables, lasers, and additional services that help a bride look and feel picture perfect on her wedding day. We want to assure you that there is no correct way to look for your wedding and generally comparing is the quickest way to feel like s*** about yourself. So don’t do that!

However, if you are thinking of doing something to enhance your already beautiful appearance, (without the worry of being overdone or not looking like yourself), keep reading to learn about the different options.

Can I get Botox the day of my wedding?

Technically, yes you can get botox the day of your wedding, but we certainly don’t recommend it! You would be wasting your money, simply because it takes a full 7-14 days to kick in and best results are usually 4-6 weeks post injections. Also, while there isn’t any serious downtimes in regard to getting Botox, there are always potential risks for bruising and other unwanted side effects.

What is Botox?

Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeveau are all brand names of Botulinum Toxin A. This medication is a type of neuromodulator that when injected, works by blocking the communication between the nerve and the muscle. By blocking this movement, the skin does not crease as much which softens lines and wrinkles. Most common areas to treat are frown lines between the brows (glabella), crow’s feet, and the forehead.

When should you get botox before your wedding?

Again, Botox, or other neuromodulators, need about 7-14 days to fully kick in, and 4-6 weeks to reveal best results. We highly recommend getting your Botox injections 4-6 weeks before your wedding, because we want to ensure your treatment is at its best result on your wedding day. This time frame also allows for scheduling a follow-up appointment with your provider, because occasionally after the 14 day time frame a touch-up is needed. When should you get filler before your wedding?

To put it simply, you want to get dermal fillers about 2 months before your wedding, but a minimum of 4 weeks at least! Initial filler injections can cause swelling and bruising. So before your final results are revealed, there is a 2 week healing period. Once the swelling has subsided, you and your provider can assess if any other alterations are needed with your filler injections. 

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that help restore volume, correct wrinkles, and contour the face. Common areas treated include cheeks, lips, chin, and jawline. They can also help smooth superficial lines. When done correctly, they create a beautiful, natural result that balances the face without being obvious that anything was done.

Should you get pre-wedding lip fillers?

Lip injections before your wedding day can be a wonderful glow-up if you are a good candidate and go to the right injector. In general, the goal is to enhance the lips without making it obvious one has lip filler. That is very much art!

Furthermore, if you do decide you are interested in getting filler before your wedding day, it is best to get lip injections 6-8 weeks prior to the date. This is because there is initial swelling and bruising from the injections for up to 2 weeks. for tips on reducing lip filler bruising and swelling read this.

Once swelling has subsided, we recommend you pop back in for a follow up appointment with your provider to ensure you’re happy with final results.

When should you get Kybella before your wedding?

We recommend getting Kybella done about 1 year prior to your wedding date. Before considering Kybella as a treatment for you, we want to be transparent that it is a commitment as it usually takes 3-6 sessions 1 month apart. Additionally, final results from a single treatment take anywhere from 1-3 months to be revealed with a 2 week healing time frame in between sessions.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is made from deoxycholic acid. This substance found in the human body that is responsible for breaking down fat. When injected directly into a fat pad, such as under the chin for a “double chin”, it causes the fat to break down in the area. The result is technically permanent (if weight remains stable) but it takes several treatments (3-6). It can also be used off-label for jowls and around the body for stubborn areas, too.

When should you get laser skin treatments before your wedding?

There are several different types of laser treatments on the market and it can be very confusing deciding which one is best suitable for you and your skin type. The best advice moving forward is that most treatments need to be done in a series of 3, 1 month apart for realistic skin improvements. You will want to complete your last treatment series 1 month before the wedding day for your skin to be at its best result and to allow for enough revoery time. Starting the series of treatments about 4-6 months before the wedding would be appropriate. How would an IPL benefit my skin before my wedding?

IPL, or intense pule light, targets skin discoloration such as age spots, hyperpigmentation, freckles, broken capillaries, and red spots. 

Specifically, this procedure works by using light energy that is converted into heat energy to target red/brown pigment in the skin cells

How would ResurFX benefit my skin before my wedding?

ResurFX treats skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, wrinkles, sun damage, loose skin, and scarring. However, it will take multiple treatments to get the desired results. A non-ablative fractional laser such as ResurFX does not damage the top layer of skin, making it safe for all skin types with minimal downtimes. It shoots laser beams just below the top layer of skin, coagulating sections of the deeper tissue. How would RF Microneedling benefit my skin before my wedding?

RF Microneedling combines the power of microneedling and radiofrequency into a combined treatment. Microneedling is used to stimulate new collagen growth by puncturing controlled micro-channels into the skin to create a healing cascade. While radiofrequency heats the tissue up to tighten & shrink. This treatment works well to tighten loose, crepey skin, target fine lines and wrinkles, as well as reduce the appearance of scarring from acne or trauma.

When should you get a facial before your wedding?

It is best to get a facial 1-2 months prior to your wedding. Some facials require no downtime at all, and others are more invasive and require minimal social downtime. More invasive facials that have downtime include intense chemical peels, such as the VI Peel, and deep cleansing facials with extractions. Usually there is 5-7 days of healing involved with these facials, so it is best to get these treatments 4-6 weeks in advanced. Other options of facials that do not have downtime include; dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, OxyGeneo, enzyme exfoliation, and a signature facial. These more gentle facials incorporate customized exfoliation and hydration which allows the skin to look refreshed and vibrant before an event.

Should I be on a skincare routine before my wedding?

Yes, it is always best to consult with your aesthetician to ensure you are on an appropriate skincare treatment plan and routine, well ahead of your wedding (and every day). Skin preparation is important before jumping into new facial treatments, that way there is no shock to the skin from using clinical grade products.  

Many times, using proper at-home skincare will enhance the results from facial treatments. It takes time for skincare ingredients to start working efficiently, so we recommend starting your skincare routine 6 months prior the your wedding.

Filler and Botox gone wrong? Can you fix it!

Let’s face it, there is nothing worse than getting poor results with injections. One will do anything to fix it ASAP! Check out our “how to fix it” guide below for all queries related to injectables and unwanted outcomes.

How to prevent bad filler and Botox

Having complete trust in a licensed injector is crucial. Receiving aesthetic injectables can be very nerve-wracking for people. Doing thorough research on the treatment itself, and the injector’s work is a must! Also, going in for a consultation is recommended before jumping in with two feet. That way, you’d have time to talk about all outcomes, including the bad ones and what can be done, before having your treatment.

In general, when administered correctly, most people do not want their dermal fillers or Botox to wear off quickly, at all! These types of treatments are used to enhance natural beauty, and can be done in a way to make one look better without attracting notice that something is different. They’re not usually used to try to recreate a whole new face. Remember that when considering treatments to be kind to yourself, and keep in mind that less is more when you are first starting. 

BAD BOTOX: What are my options?:

Can you make botox "wear off faster"?

Botox, or Xeomin and Dysport, unfortunately cannot be reversed. Once this medication is injected into the intended muscle to relax wrinkles and soften existing lines, it limits or completely stops the muscle from moving. On a positive note, this is not a permanent treatment. Results gradually wear off and dissipate after two to three months. Usually the unwanted results wear off faster 

High Stress

When there is an increase in stress hormone, we have seen in practice, that Botox may metabolize quicker. We certainly don’t encourage that you try to create stress as it can cause havoc on the body in other ways. Rather, consider controlled stress like exercise. (see below)

Lack of Zinc

A few studies have shown that if there is a diet lacking in zinc, the Botulinum Toxin medications cannot bind to the receptors correctly. So if you are nervous for a first time treatment, consider skipping the Zinc until you see your results.

Extraneous Exercise

Workouts that increase metabolism such as running, HIIT training, and hot yoga lead to higher metabolism rates. It’s possible that a higher metabolism could make results wear off faster 

Acupuncture

There are no direct studies on this but we have seen anecdotal evidence in our office that when people are getting acupuncture their results often wear off faster. This is especially when needles are inserted near the treatment area (i.e. forehead)

Can you temporarily fix bad Botox?

Since there are no scientific studies that prove we can make Botox wear off faster, there are a few ways to fix, or alter, the undesired results. Less noticeable mistakes are always a plus! Consult with your injector to see what your options are.

Possible Botox techniques to alter a case of "bad Botox"

Droopy Eyelid– it is very rare to have a droopy eyelid caused by Botox alone, if it happens- this is called lid ptosis. Immediately see your injector and they will assess if prescribed eyedrops are needed to help prop the eyelid up. Sometimes counter injections of Botox on the actual eyelid can help as well. The good news is that this side effect typically wears off within a few weeks to a few months and it is not permanent. 

Heavy Eyebrows– here are two potential causes of the feeling of heavy eyebrows:

1. the injector over-treated the forehead. If the injector properly treated the glabellar area, then, unfortunately, you have to wait for this to loosen up over a few weeks or months.

2. the injector did not treat the glabella area enough or not at all. This is an easy fix with additional Botox to the glabella to stop the pulling down of the brows. 

One Raised Eyebrow– this is usually an easy fix, the injector needs to add more Botox to the eyebrow that is having more movement and causing you to have uneven eyebrows.

Once I start Botox, can I stop?

Yes! There is no reason you cannot stop doing Botox at any point in time. However, when injected properly, most people are addicted to “aging gracefully”.

BAD FILLER: what are my options?

Again, the best way to prevent “bad filler” is to go to an experienced injector whose work you have seen. These are medical procedures that are just as much art as they are science. Both are crucial to good results. Trying to save money here, will usually cost more in the long-run if you have to have your filler dissolved and re-done. 

Can you reverse dermal filler?

The good news is, yes, you can reverse many types of dermal filler! Most dermal filler injections are made from a substance called Hyaluronic Acid (HA), and there is an enzyme called Hyaluronidase, that dissolves HA. This is a prescribed medication that has to be administered by a medical professional only.

Can Hyaluronidase fix bad filler ASAP?

Yes it can. Once the enzyme is injected in the desired area, it immediately starts working over the next 24 hours. However, additional treatments may be needed if the filler used was a thicker product. 

What fillers are HA?

Most FDA approved filler brands including: Juvederm, Restylane, Versa, and RHA products are made from HA. Again, emphasizing the importance of doing your research and consulting with your injector beforehand so you are aware of the types of products and potential risks.

Is there any scientific proof of dissolving filler?

This study, published in JAMA Network, displays the effectiveness, over a 4 week period, of injecting hyaluronidase into HA fillers; Restylane and Juvederm. The data determines that at a 4-week follow up from initial dissolving, hyaluronidase at low doses was effective at dissolving HA filler. 

Are there fillers that can't be dissolved?

Yes, there are several types of filler that cannot be dissolved. These include PMMA fillers like Bellafill, PLLA like Sculptra (a collagen stimulator), Calcium Hydroxyapatite (Radiesse), as well as silicone and fat transfer. 

As an aside, though Radiesse cannot technically be dissolved, it can be “dispersed” allowing the body to break it down faster

Is it expensive to dissolve filler?

It is recommended to schedule a follow up appointment with your injecting provider to discuss your options. If your desired results are not achieved, or you experienced a bad reaction, some injectors may reverse the filler at no cost. If however, you want to go to a different injector or get a second opinion, costs vary from the amount of hyaluronidase the provider needs to use.

Side note: it is very important to discuss with your provider what they use to dissolve the filler they are injecting with incase of emergency or high risk. With any injectable treatment there are risks that should be known.

Does dissolving filler hurt?

There are always initial pokes at the insertion site. The medication can be reconstituted with other drugs to make it more comfortable, but when injected alone it can sting quite a bit! Ask your injecting provider what to expect during your treatment, as each office is different. At Elite, we use Lidocaine and Sodium Bicarbonate to make dissolving more comfortable.

When administered safely, with a goal of natural results, to enhance your personal features, dermal fillers and Tox (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, Jeuveau) are a true confidence boost! Trusting your licensed injector and being aware of risk factors, are highly advised before getting injectables. Luckily there are some ways to alter or fix these mistakes you may encounter. 

With all of that being said, keep in mind that even if you go to the most experienced and credentialed injector, side effects and poor outcomes are always possible. They could do everything 100% right and you may just have strange anatomy or a strange response to treatment.

When most people think of dermal fillers, chin filler is probably not on their minds. But for many clients, precisely injected chin filler gives them the opportunity to enhance the shape and proportions of their chin.

What is chin filler?

Chin fillers are dermal fillers injected into the chin with the goal of enhancing the shape, size, or proportion of the chin. It can be done as a single treatment or as a series of injections spaced 2-4 weeks apart, depending how much the chin needs to be built up. 

It is a nonsurgical procedure that is not permanent but can last several years. Many clients getting chin fillers hope that the procedure will give them a stronger, more balanced chin.

How much does chin filler cost?

Chin filler cost is mainly dependent on the type of filler used, the amount of filler needed, and where you have the procedure done. For most procedures chin filler will cost between $500-$1500. This is the point where we have to remind you that the most expensive type of filler is the kind you have to have twice. Make sure you pick the right injector, not just the cheapest.

What is chin filler treatment like?

A chin filler treatment is a very quick outpatient procedure that should take an hour or less. The injection portion of the procedure may only be a few minutes. When you get to the office the injector will walk you through the procedure and assess the structure of your face.

After going through any questions you may have, they will carefully select where to place their injections using a needle and syringe or in some cases a cannula. The injections will be done quickly and without much discomfort and after some brief aftercare instructions, you will be on your way to resume your day.

Is chin filler painful?

The chin filler procedure can be mildly uncomfortable but tolerable. The mentalis muscle (chin muscle) can be a bit tender, especially afterward because we move the chin so much to talk and eat. The quick pricks with a needle will feel mildly uncomfortable in some areas and sharper in others. Most fillers used for the chin have small amounts of lidocaine to help reduce the discomfort of the injections.

After your procedure, your chin may feel a bit sore and possibly heavier than it usually feels which may make things uncomfortable temporarily while it heals.

What types of filler are used for chin filler?

In general, injectors use a thicker filler for the jaw and chin area to add volume. In most cases, injectors will use a Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler or a calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) filler “off label” for the procedure. Some of the commonly used fillers are:

How long does chin filler last?

Depending on the type of filler injected, and how much was injected, chin filler can last quite a long time, between 10-24 months. At that point, patients will often have the procedure redone to maintain results. They may also come in at regular intervals for touch-ups to maintain the treatment.

What should you do to prepare for chin filler?

Talk to your injecting provider for a complete list of pre-care instructions and things to avoid. In general, it will likely be recommended that you:

  • Avoid over the counter blood-thinning medications and supplements like ibuprofen, fish oil, and aspirin (unless these are prescribed for a health condition). 
  • Read this article on tips to avoid filler bruising and swelling HERE
  • Eat pineapple in the week leading up to your treatment if you are nervous about swelling. You can also take Bromelain tablets in the 24 hours before treatment to help reduce pain and swelling.
  • Consider taking arnica which will help limit bruising at the injection site.
  •  Avoid drinking alcohol prior to your treatment. You’ll be unable to consent to the procedure and it may also make your recovery slower by increasing bleeding and bruising.
  • Consider limiting the amount of sodium you consume prior to your appointment. Sodium can cause your body to retain more water which will increase your swelling.
  • Talk to your injecting provider about any medical conditions or concerns that you may have. 
  • Show up with a clean, makeup-free face.

What is chin filler aftercare like?

You’ll want to talk to your injector about specific aftercare instructions that may be specially geared to your situation. Most likely, you’ll be able to return to mild activity immediately following your procedure. In general, it will be recommended that you:

  • Consider applying an ice pack to the area injected to reduce swelling for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid touching or massaging the area treated.
  • Take acetaminophen as directed to alleviate any pain or discomfort. Ibuprofen can delay the healing of bruises or make them worse if present.
  • Avoid any heat with the area (places like saunas and hot showers, as well as hot wax) unless instructed to use warm compresses for bruising after the first 24 hrs.
  • Consider taking arnica to help reduce any bruising or discomfort. 
  • Avoid alcohol or exercise for 24 hours afterward to keep down the potential bruising.

Tips to reduce bruising/swelling

Is chin filler safe?

Dermal fillers like chin filler are generally very safe when injected by an experienced professional like Ali. Make sure you do your research and read reviews of different injectors before having your procedure done. That being said, any aesthetic procedure comes with inherent risks, talk to your injector about any concerns you may have. 

What are the side effects of chin filler?

In the days following your procedure you may experience the following mild side effects from your chin filler injections:

  • Redness
  • Itchiness at the injection site
  • Mild bruising
  • Swelling in the area treated
  • Soreness
  • Possible bone resorption (see below)

Can chin filler move?

Filler migration in the chin area is rare, but possible. Some injectors will massage filler after injecting it to prevent lumps and make sure that it has accurately treated the area. After your treatment, your injector will most likely advise that you do not touch the area treated and avoid certain activities that may cause it to migrate. Talk to your injecting provider about all possible side effects.  

Can chin filler cause bone loss?

A recent study of 80 patients in Asia showed unexpected bone loss of the chin after injections of hyaluronic acid fillers. It was correlated with the amount of filler used. The more filler used, the more bone loss there was. However, there was no change in the aesthetic effect of the chin despite this side effect. 

This phenomenon is not seen in other areas of the face like the cheeks or jawline, even when the filler is also injected directly on the bone. There are many theories on why this may happen. Talk to your injecting provider about his risk and all risks associated with aesthetic procedures. It is always best to have an initial consultation, with a provider like Ali, to learn/understand all of the risks and benefits.

Can chin filler fix a weak chin?

Yes, chin filler can be injected in a way that adds definition to the chin and makes it appear stronger. This procedure can help patients that have a small, weak, or receding chins achieve more balance and harmony of their facial profile. 

Can filler get rid of a double chin?

Though chin filler will not remove tissue, sometimes the appearance of a double chin may come from the shape and structure of the chin. In these cases filler can be used to reshape the jawline and chin to give it a stronger look. 

If there is significant submental fat (fat below the chin) causing the appearance of a “double” chin, then Kybella is a great treatment to do in combination with chin and jawline filler to reduce the extra tissue. See other alternatives below.

What other procedures are an alternative to chin filler?

Chin implant

What is a chin implant: a chin implant is a surgical procedure where an implant of the desired shape and size is placed in the chin area to enhance this feature. 

Cost: $3000-5000

Benefits: This is a permanent procedure where the exact shape and size of the chin can be determined.

Negatives: This procedure requires surgery which always comes with risks and is more expensive than other options.

As above, when an enhanced chin profile is desired it may also be necessary to slim and contour the jawline for best results. This can be accomplished in many different ways but a few treatments often done with chin filler include:

Is chin filler worth it?

Whether something is “worth it” or not is highly subjective, but we have had immensely positive feedback from all of our chin filler clients. It is one of those areas that is subtle but quite noticeable and can really enhance someone’s look while ensuring they still look like themselves.

Introduction: All about under-eye filler

Have you gotten tired of trying under-eye creams hoping that they would help you get rid of the dark sunken look under your eyes? For many clients this area is extremely frustrating, but the good news is that there is a solution. Under-eye (tear trough) filler can give the area under your eyes increased volume and reduce the appearance of dark hollows. In this article we’ll dive into what types of fillers are used, what the procedure is like, and what under-eye fillers cost.

What is under-eye filler?

Tear trough filler (aka under-eye filler) is a treatment where hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are injected using a needle or cannula into and around the dark hollows under the eyes. It can be done alone or in conjunction with cheek filler. 

Why is under-eye filler sometimes done with cheek filler?

It’s important to address the whole face when treating this area for a natural and balanced look. Oftentimes under eye hollows can be from loss of volume in the cheeks. Always determine the underlying cause of the deficit before treating.

Also, it is crucial to go to an experienced provider, as this area can not only be dangerous to inject, but also difficult to inject in the correct plane (or level).

What types of filler can be used in the under-eye region?

Most of the softer, thinner HA (hyaluronic acid) fillers can be used in the under-eye area. Sometimes firmer HA’s can be used in severe cases, or when they are diluted. It is not advised to use non-HA fillers in this thin, sensitive area. 

The most commonly used hyaluronic acid fillers for under-eyes are:

Other fillers such as collagen, Sculptra and Radiesse are NOT recommended in this area due to risk of overfilling, pain, reaction and nodules. This is a high movement area that needs a soft and gentle HA filler for best results.

What does tear trough filler treat?

Our bodies naturally lose volume in our tear trough as we age. We also have separation of the fat pads under the eyes and the cheeks. This leaves an indentation, or dark hollowing, under the eye which can be softened with dermal fillers for a more refreshed “awake” appearance. Below are some before and after photos that help visualize tear trough filler.

Who is a good candidate for under-eye filler?

A good candidate is someone who:

  • Has always had dark under eye hollows genetically 
  • Developed dark under eye hollows with aging 
  • Has good skin quality & cheek support

A poor candidate is someone who:

  • Has large under eye bags rather than hollows
  • Has extremely thin or fragile skin that appears to be “see-through”
  • Has full face hollowing and requires full-face intervention prior to under eye filler

Yes, under-eye fillers done by experienced medical providers can be done safely. It’s important to consult with your injecting provider, like our Nurse Practitioner Ali, to discuss the risks and benefits of any procedure. See below for risks

Are there risks involved with under eye filler?

All medical and aesthetic procedures come with risks. Some of these risks involved in tear trough filler include:

  1. A poor result, usually over-filling with a puffy appearance
  2. Prolonged swelling from poor product selection or placement
  3. A blue tinge under the eyes (tyndall effect) from too much filler, filler placed too superficially or filler placed on a poor candidate
  4. A vascular occlusion where dermal filler gets into the artery (angular artery) which can lead to severe complications. 

What are the benefits of tear trough filler?

  • Tear trough filler can add volume to lessen the “hollowness” under the eyes
  • It can give you a more rested and youthful appearance 
  • Filler will diminish under-eye bags (in certain cases) 
  • It will eliminate or lessen dark circles under the eyes

How much does under-eye filler cost?

Under-eye filler varies in cost based on the type that you receive, where you have the procedure done, and who is performing the procedure. Below is a breakdown of the cost, on average.

  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers like Juvederm, Belotero, and Restylane generally cost between $600-$1200 per treatment. This does not include any other filler that may be recommended. When combined with other facial fillers the cost for the under-eye portion may be lower.

How do you prepare for under-eye filler?

Talk to your injecting provider for a complete list of instructions, but in general, it will likely be recommended to:

  • Avoid over the counter medications that may thin your blood like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil  (unless prescribed)
  • Do not consume alcohol 24-48 hours before your procedure
  • Come to your appointment with a clean face and no make-up (if possible) 

Some additional recommendations to help you prepare:

Taking arnica tablets help to prevent bruising/swelling, too (as with any supplement, talk to your provider before you take OTC medications or supplements)

Consider icing the under eyes for 10-20 minutes prior fo your procedure to decrease the risk of swelling/bruising

What is an under-eye filler treatment like?

Under-eye filler appointments are generally about 30-60 minutes. The actual procedure itself may only take about 5-minutes per side, but the preparation and discussions prior to the appointment will take up extra time. Your injector may also recommend injecting other areas first, such as the cheeks and mid-face, to support the tear trough area and for a better result which takes additional time.

What is under-eye filler aftercare like?

Every injector will have their own specific aftercare instructions. Below are some of the general recommendations for under eye filler aftercare:

  • Try to avoid using concealer or other eye makeup for the first 24 hours.
  • Do not rub the treated area for at least 24-48 hours after your injections. 
  • Avoid intense physical activity for 24-48 hours, if possible, as exercise may increase swelling to the area treated. 
  • Consider avoiding alcohol for 48 hours after your treatment. Drinking could increase the swelling and bruising.
  • Use an ice pack to ice the area for 5-10 minutes off and on for the first 48 hours. This will help you reduce  swelling quicker. It’s also a great reason to sit on the couch and relax.

When will I see results from tear trough filler?

Immediately after the procedure you will be able to see your results! For many people, there will also be some swelling immediately post-procedure. The swelling will start to go down in about 48 hours. You will be able to see the final results in 7 to 14 days in most cases but in rare cases, it may take longer, especially during allergy season.

How long do under-eye fillers last?

Over the years we have discovered that filler tends to last much longer in this area than in other high movement areas. Lasting even longer than the lips. The same filler brand that may only last 6-8 months in the lips may last 1-2 years under the eyes.  More cross-linked fillers, such as the Juvederm family, can last 2-3 years, but this does come with an increased risk of reactions and late-onset nodules. What is the best under-eye filler?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are the best fillers for under-eye treatments and we have tried almost all of the available brands on the U.S. market. Our favorites have been Belotero Balance and Restylane-L for most cases.

For many, needleless lip fillers, such as the Hyaluron Pen, seem like the perfect cheap alternative to traditional lip fillers. But are the results the same? Is the Hyaluron Pen even a safe treatment? In this article we dive into needleless lip fillers to give you an expert opinion on results and risks of the Hyaluron Pen. 

What is needleless lip filler?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Lip Infusion pens are pressurized devices that infuse HA serum into the top layers of skin. It does NOT use a needle to inject an HA solution like traditional fillers. The companies market these products as a way to promote collagen production and add volume to the area treated.

Unlike standard lip filler treatments that need to be done by a licensed injector, these procedures can be done by non-licensed professionals, and are even available for at-home use!

What is the cost of needleless lip fillers?

It will usually cost around $300 to have this procedure done each time. 

Are needleless lip fillers safe?

The Short is answer is, no! These devices use pressure to force the hyaluronic acid into the superficial (shallow) layers of the skin which can lead to: ulcerations in the lips, swelling, bruising, uneven results, vascular occlusions, infection, and cold sore outbreaks.

 

If you’re thinking that some of the above results can occur with regular lip filler, you’re correct. The difference is that when lip filler is injected by a trained medical professional they know how to avoid those side effects and also treat them in the rare instance they may occur. A non-trained individual may think all discoloration is a bruise whereas a medical professional (RN, PA, NP, Physician) will be able to identify a vascular occlusion and be able to respond immediately.

 

Because of so many adverse events these devices have been banned in other countries, such as Canada, and are getting more and more bad press for requiring medical attention post procedure.

Do needleless lip fillers work?

It can be temporarily effective to have needleless lip filler, but it may not give you the desired outcome. A major problem with needleless lip filler is that the product diffuses to a large area which can mean your body rapidly processes it in a short period of time. According to the Hyaluron Pen makers, “The skin gets a bit swollen at first, then the effects last for a couple of weeks, maybe a month, and the situation looks as it was before – no better, no worse.” 

It is also very difficult for someone that doesn’t have medical experience and proper training to achieve safe natural looking results. Anatomy of the lips, and a natural result, is a complex process that takes a lot of training and practice. You have to respect the natural borders, tubercles, and shape of each person’s unique set of lips along with having the technique to create the desired result. Results typically only last up to 2-4 weeks. Mind you, the results are short-term compared to HA lip filler injectables which last up to 6-8 months depending on the product used.

Does needleless lip filler work as well as regular lip filler injections?

No, as mentioned above, these products are only going to last for around 2-4 weeks according to the manufacturers. Additionally, the product placement cannot be controlled in the pens like they can for injections. So the results won’t look as good, won’t last as long, and there are just as many risks or more due to being administered by anyone, with or without training.

Who can perform needleless lip fillers?

The biggest problem with needleless lip fillers (Hyaluron Pens) is that you don’t have to be a licensed medical professional to offer this treatment. Because of this, many spas will offer the procedure without having anyone specially trained to perform it on staff. What is the recovery time like for needleless lip filler?

If there are no complications, then recovery time is fairly brief with less general swelling and bruising than with traditional lip injections. 

In most cases, swelling should go down in 24-48 hours but some consumers report having swelling for up to 1-2 weeks, just like with regular lip injections. Below are some helpful tips for reducing swelling and bruising from lip injections.

Some people are hell-bent on saving money and will try the cheap DIY home products, no matter what anyone says. If that’s you, just know the risks versus benefits. Know what to look for in case of an emergency like infection or vascular occlusion, and know where to go to have it fixed if it does occur.

 

With that in mind, remember that the most expensive procedure you’ll ever get will be the one you have to get twice. So if you do something at home, and it’s horrible or dangerous, you will have to pay to get it dissolved or to go to the emergency room. Then you will have to pay to get it fixed if you still want the result.
